Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay lived with her Aunt Denise and her mother, who pushed DuVernay to be creative and drawn by the arts. The actress worked as a late night nurse in order to give her aunt the time she needed in her day to indulge in theatre, literature, and art. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how the arts can serve to engage people. In the same way, her mother was socially conscious and taught how to express herself through art. DuVernay was raised together with her parents in Compton and spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. The DuVernay's father was a witness to the Civil Rights marches that took place over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. Her time in Selma inspired her later to make a film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. In the year 1990, DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. Following graduation, she went to the University of California Los Angeles where she received qualifications in English and African American studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in journalistic broadcasting while in school. Her first job was working as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being asked examine the garbage at the residence by a member jury. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied with journalism, and she decided to switch careers into the publicity industry. DuVernay began her first position as a publicity specialist in small production studios right after her graduation. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. In addition to PR her agency also created a variety of lifestyle and promotional networks including The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
