Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on the 24th of August 1972 within Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art by her aunt Denise when she was a child. Her aunt worked the evening shift as a nurse, so she could pursue her love of theater and literature in the daytime. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she introduced to her. DuVernay recognized that art is powerful in promoting the cause of activism. Her mother, too, was conscious of social issues and taught the importance of speaking up through the art of. DuVernay spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama, where the father of DuVernay was born and educated. Her father recalled watching the Civil Rights movement's historic march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summers that DuVernay was led her to write a script for a movie that focused on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay earned her graduation certificate in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she was awarded diplomas in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began producing to broadcast journalism while she was still at college. She began her career as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being commissioned to sit at the home that one of the members of the jury, and then take a look at their trash. The jury member was unhappy with the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose that she would switch to the world of public relations. DuVernay started her first job as a publicity specialist in the small studio that she worked in after college. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999.
